The Basics of Anxiety Management
For those suffering from severe anxiety disorders, proper anxiety management is imperative. While it may sound a little confusing and just a bit scary at first, anxiety management is nothing to be
worried about. It is hoped that by explaining a few of the basic strategies used in anxiety
management methodology that the reader will further understand the process and perhaps be a bit more relaxed going into the process.
Anxiety management is exactly what it says; a process of exercises and strategies to bring your
level of stress and anxiety under control and down into manageable proportions.
Panic and fear are a huge part of the experience for those suffering from anxiety disorders. Anxiety management is available in many forms to alleviate the stress associated with anxiety
disorders. The multiple forms of anxiety management include such therapies as counseling,
medications and training exercises that teach the individual how to cope with the stressful situations in their lives, which are customized
to the needs of the individual patient.
Anxiety management may involve strategic use of family and group therapy. This form
of anxiety management is effective because it gets to the root of the problem by prompting an open discussion in a safe
environment. Family or Peer therapy is often recommended in cases where a problem in the home
environment, such as abuse or chemical dependence, or post traumatic stress, stemming from mentally stressful events such as victimization
by crime or natural disaster, is the underlying cause of the anxiety disorder. The knowledge that others have survived the same experiences or discussing the root problems and their
solutions in the safe environment of therapy is a great comfort to the person suffering from anxiety disorder.
If you are suffering from anxiety, your medical professional may also recommend the use of a variety of medications aimed at
controlling your stress levels as part of your anxiety management regiment. While these
medications may not be able to eliminate external sources of stress, such as a high energy work environment, they provide your body with
the correct chemicals needed for your brain to properly process the environmental stimuli, thus reducing your stress level and allowing you
to better control your anxiety.
Cognitive Behavior Retraining
Additionally, cognitive behavior retraining has been found to be extremely helpful to individuals in the anxiety management
process. By using exercises that retrain the patient in the methods of handling a stressful
situation, the therapist can help the individual to look at the situation thru a different light and work thru their fears. This form of anxiety management usually incorporates role playing or gradual exposure to various stress
creating atmospheres so that the individual can understand how to make use of a more suitable response to the stressor. This form of anxiety management has been
particularly effective for individuals suffering from irrational fears,or phobias, as it shows them how to deal with the causes of their
fears from a safe distance provided by the therapists controlled environment.
For those suffering from anxiety disorders, the outlook is often very bleak. Most
generally these individuals have subconsciously trained their minds that nothing will work.
Fortunately, with proper anxiety management techniques, this way of thinking and their anxiety disorders can be eliminated.
